Applicants need to ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria, aspire and have the potential to move into a Director role/ or equivalent in the next 1 to 2 years, have organisational support and can commit to approx 15 hours study per week. Leadership for today. Leadership for tomorrow.  The Nye Bevan programme has been specifically designed to develop senior leaders. It’s been shown to accelerate individuals into executive roles, helping them perform better at board level, and help boards better meet operational challenges today and enable change for tomorrow.

Designed with national and international experts in health and organisational performance, the programme offers support and learning to build personal resilience, confidence and capabilities over 12 months. The Nye Bevan programme has developed over 1,000 senior leaders, with nearly 40% of recent graduates reporting being in a more senior role, which 90% directly attribute to the programme.



Specifically designed to help CEOs and top leaders of the future gain the skills needed for tomorrow’s NHS. This flagship programme has been created by internationally renowned business and academic experts: KPMG, Manchester Business School and University of Birmingham.

After an intensive 12 months of self-managed learning that touches on every significant part of your leadership journey to date, you will receive the NHS Leadership Academy’s highest accolade – the Award in Executive Leadership. With your executive aspirations in mind, Leading Care III is designed to:

  1. Give you an unrivalled understanding of the NHS from a system-wide, national and global perspective
  2. Develop the skills, knowledge, attitudes and self-belief you need to succeed at executive or board level
  3. See you collaborate with high calibre peers, using your diverse experiences to solve difficult problems and deliver cultural and system-wide change within the NHS
  4. Expand your horizons and challenge inherited wisdom to improve outcomes and care for patients – equipped with the ideas and tools to raise the bar by tackling complex problems with innovative thinking
  5. Help you build a powerful support network within the healthcare system
  6. Enhance your ability to influence local and national policies
  7. Ensure you make an immediate personal and organisational impact to improve experiences for patients and whole communities

Programme content

The Nye Bevan programme for aspirant directors will give you the skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviours needed to lead health and care organisations. It is about operational excellence for today and securing the change needed for tomorrow.

It is shaped around you. Based on the latest leadership thinking the programme will increase your capabilities and confidence, support resilience and prepare you for your next board-level executive director role.

Delivery of the programme is through a combination of face to face experiential learning at residential workshops, self-managed learning sets, and online via our state-of-the-art virtual campus.

Cost and funding options

The NHS subsidised cost for the programme is £4,500.

This applies to those who work for organisations providing NHS funded care.

The programme cost is fully inclusive of all accommodation, tuition and access to the online

virtual campus.


Participants are able to self-fund a place on the programme. Please be aware standard practice

is to invoice for payment in full before the programme starts. We offer an opportunity to pay

the full amount over two installments within one financial year.


The Academy’s bursary scheme supports talented individuals from under-represented groups

across leadership levels who, without financial help, would miss out on the opportunity to

access its excellent leadership development programmes.

There are a very limited number of bursaries (covering the programme fee), which are available

to those who have exhausted all other possibilities for funding and belong to groups such as:
