Leadership Development Programmes

A suite of leadership development programmes are available to support our current leaders and develop the next generation of leaders. The provision consists of:

All of which provide a comprehensive suite of development opportunities for leaders at all levels.

NHS Leadership Academy Programmes 

Rosalind Franklin Programme

Currently open – This programme is for clinical and non-clinical middle leaders aspiring to lead large and complex programmes, departments, services or systems of care.

Edward Jenner Programme

Currently open - An online programme for all NHS staff to develop the fundamentals of leadership in their roles.

Mary Seacole Programme

Currently open - The programme is for first time leaders looking to move into their first formal leadership role.

Mary Seacole Programme-Community Pharmacy

Currently open - The programme is for community pharmacists and pharmacy technicians working in community pharmacy for at least 40% of their working week.

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Programme

Currently closed – Applications close at 4pm on 16 November 2018. This is for middle to senior level leaders.

Nye Bevan Programme

Currently open -  The Nye Bevan programme has been specifically designed to develop senior leaders. It’s been shown to accelerate individuals into executive roles, helping them perform better at board level, and help boards better meet operational challenges today and enable change for tomorrow. Successful completion of the programme leads to an NHS Leadership Academy Award in Executive Healthcare Leadership. Applications will close on 23 September 2019.

The Director Programme

Currently closed - For Accountable Officers, Clinical Chairs, and Executive Directors.

Aspiring Chief Executive Programme 

Currently closed - For individual who aspire to be Chief Executive of provided trust organisation within the next 12-24 months.

Clinical Executive Fast Track Scheme

Currently closed -  The CEFTS is for all registered healthcare professionals who are clinicians and those in roles below board/governing body level who are interested in moving into senior leadership positions within the next three years.

Graduate Management Training Scheme

Currently closed- The GMTS is for high potential emerging leaders in five specialisms; General Management, HR, Finance, Health Analysis and Informatics.

Ready Now Programme

Currently closed - This positive action programme is for leaders from a BAME(black, asian or minority ethnic) background on a transformational learning journey, helping them to realise their potential and take that next step up to a more senior role, to the boardroom and beyond.

Strategic System Leadership Programme for STPs

This is a unique opportunity for senior leaders to solve problems, accelerate solutions, build relationships and leadership capacity whilst working beyond organisational boundaries.

HOPE European Exchange Programme

Currently closed -This programme is open to healthcare professionals who have managerial responsibilities in the UK.

Stepping Up Programme

Currently open - The Stepping Up programme is a leadership development programme for black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) colleagues who work within healthcare (the NHS or an organisation providing NHS care).

It aims to create greater levels of sustainable inclusion within the NHS by addressing the social, organisational and psychological barriers restricting BAME colleagues from progressing.

Return to Work Mentoring programme

Currently open -This programme is an inclusive mentoring support package open to NHS leaders at all levels and designed to help transitioning back into work.

Ethical Mentoring programme

Applications for the programme are open. You can register your interest in future cohorts here. This programme is for accredited NHS mentors and/or coaches working through our network of Local Leadership Academy regional coaching/mentoring registers or directly within your own organisations.

Action Learning Set (ALS) Facilitator programme

Applications are now open and are due to close on Monday 8 July 2019.

Aimed at those with experience of development practices such as coaching, mentoring and experiential learning - The ALS programme is an exciting and rewarding opportunity that not only provides facilitators with high-quality personal development but also puts them at the heart of developing the future leaders of the NHS on our Graduate Management Training Scheme.

Health and Social Care Leaders Scheme 

The Health and Care Leaders Scheme (HCLS) was formally launched in 2015 and is jointly funded and co-produced by the Department of Health and its 14 Arm’s Length Bodies (ALBs).


East of England Programmes

Accelerated Director Development Scheme

Our Accelerated Director Development Scheme is a Chief Executive sponsored scheme to identify and develop leaders for Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, who have the potential to fill key executive director roles within 9 to 18 months. It is co-designed, owned and delivered on behalf of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Talent Forum. Member CEOs and AOs will sponsor and retain oversight of high potential participants. The ADDS is focused on identifying and developing high potential leaders from operational and clinical backgrounds. The ADDS is a unique scheme offering automatic shortlisting for appropriate Executive Director roles, thereby linking development and job opportunities. Nominees are Band 8c and above or equivalent, nominated by their line manager and sponsored by their CEO.

Primary Care Leadership Collaboratives

Practice Managers Leadership Programme

Be part of this exciting development opportunity, enabling practice managers working in Primary Care in the East of England to enhance their leadership and improvement skills.

Affiliate Programmes 

Leadership for Change

Currently closed - Building on the success of the first three cohorts, Leadership for Change Cohort 4 has been redesigned specifically to support teams that are leading the implementation of STPs.

Leadership for Change Cohort 4 will work with groups of 4-6 leaders who are playing a leading role in the implementation of some aspect of a specific STP. Participants could come from any sector including Children’s Services, Adult Social Care, Public Health, CCGs, Hospitals, health and social care providers and the Voluntary Sector.

Future Directors Programme

Currently closed - The Future Directors Programme, which is part of the ‘Leadership for Change’ suite of programmes, is an ongoing collaboration between the Staff College and Public Health England. The programme has evolved from other senior leadership programmes offered to aspiring directors across the public sector and provides an opportunity for senior officers to jointly prepare for the next phase of their careers and learn from each other

LeaP - Leadership Programme for Trainee Doctors

Currently closed - The programme ensures trainees are exposed to Leadership and Management development over a one-year period early in their Specialist Training, rather than simply as a “quick fix” five-day course in their final year.  

Quality, Service Improvement and Redesign (QSIR)

Currently open - This suite of programmes provides clinical and non-clinical staff with the know-how to design and implement more efficient, patient-centred services. Based on tried and tested tools and approaches, it covers the breadth of service improvement skills.

Transformational Change Through System Leadership (TCSL)

Currently closed-  The TCSL programme is for senior teams from health and care systems who are actively engaged in delivering system-wide transformational change. It offers the opportunity to build personal and team capabilities in transformational change whilst putting theory into practice.

CUHP Senior Medical Leaders Development Programme

Currently closed - In response to local demand Cambridge University Health Partners is pleased to offer 'Leading for Excellence' a Senior Clinical Leadership & Management Development Programme aimed at current or aspiring Clinical Directors or Senior Clinical Leaders.

CSLE - Leading Into the Future

Currently closed - This programme brings together leaders from health, policing, fire and rescue, central & local government, offender management, education and the voluntary and charitable sector to understand and influence the intertwining and at times, competing agendas within the public sector, whilst providing an opportunity for organisational leaders to work together on cross cutting issues.
