Inclusive Leader

We acknowledge that we all have a responsibility to develop, embed and sustain inclusive cultures within our workplaces and inclusive practices within our own work. This award aims to acknowledge those individuals who do that in innovative and outstanding ways, role modelling for all of us excellent Inclusive Leadership.

The NHS Constitution states that the NHS ‘belongs to us all’ and that ‘nobody is excluded, discriminated against or left behind’.  In short, we have a healthcare system within which ‘Everyone Counts’. We know from what patients, service users, carers, communities and employees tell us of their experiences of Health and Social Care, is that they, somehow, on occasions and for some persistently, ‘count’ less. This is unacceptable and so we need to do more to ensure ‘Everyone Counts’.

This award is for an individual or team who is dedicated to ensuring that equality and inclusion lie at the heart of their day to day work and in their belief and commitment to the NHS – its constitution, values, structures, processes, behaviours and culture.

Please answer the following questions by giving suitable examples of how the nominee(s) demonstrated leadership qualities in their work, words or actions. We have made some suggestions of examples you might give; do feel free to use any others which you believe answer the question.

Q1 Do they ensure that services are commissioned, designed, procured, delivered and evaluated with the key aims of meeting the health and wellbeing needs and aspirations of all local communities? For example:

  • They engage and involve communities, working with them to create and deliver services to meet local need, including groups representing the nine protected characteristics and other disadvantaged groups as explained in the Equality Act 2010
  • Evidence of a reduction in health inequalities

Q2 Do they actively promote equality and celebrate difference, along with the benefits of why an inclusive workforce at all levels is vital to improved patient care and population health and wellbeing? Examples of this are:

  • They take every opportunity to help others learn about difference
  • They are someone who ‘Calls Out’ discrimination and exclusion when they see it and help individuals/ teams change behaviours and attitudes, seeing these moments as something to learn from
  • Evidence of specific awareness campaigns or interventions, and their outcomes that they have led on within their team, service or organisation   

Q3 Do those around them at work feel they are able to ‘be themselves’ and are ‘fully included’? This may be demonstrated through:

  • Their colleagues feel able to innovate, influence, develop, initiate change, are given and able to give feedback safely without recrimination - found in evidence from staff feedback, service users, organisation staff surveys
  • Staff from all backgrounds including those people identified as having protected characteristics, have the same opportunities as offered to their colleagues and are able to safely report concerns 

Q4 Do they demonstrate inclusive leadership, being consciously, intentionally and visibly inclusive, acting as an ambassador for under-represented groups, citizens and unheard voices? For example:

  • They go above and beyond their role to act as a voice for diversity and inclusion, shown through staff and patient feedback and colleague testimonies
  • They engage with and involve colleagues in senior leadership positions to assure their commitment to promoting equality, celebrating diversity and continually developing inclusive services and cultures within and beyond the organisation
